Published: January 11, 2016

During 2015, the Da Nang Historical Science Association held many talks and workshops marking the city and the country’s major historical events.

In particular, a scientific talk was held to highlight the great efforts by the people of Quang Nam and Da Nang to establish the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam in 1945 and 1946.  A writing contest was organised to express thoughts and feelings about Uncle Ho’s letter which was sent to pupils nationwide at the start of the new academic year on 5 September 1945.

As for this year, the Association is focusing on coordinating with the Hoang Sa Islands District People’s Committee to organise a discussion about plans for the display of exhibits at the Hoang Sa Exhibition House.  They will also introduce a book entitled ‘Nguyen Ba Thanh - a Son of Da Nang’ to the public, and make a suggestion to the city authorities about setting up a memorial stele for the day when the US marines landed at Da Nang on 8 March 1965.  Great efforts will be made to hold many activities in the city to mark the 90th death anniversary of Phan Chau Trinh, who was one of the nation’s most prominent patriots and educators, and the 100th death anniversary of Thai Phien, the revolutionary soldier.

During his meeting on Sunday with representatives from the Association, the municipal Party Committee Deputy Secretary Vo Cong Tri asked the Association to hold a celebration in recognition of the historical event when, for 76 days and nights between March and May 1966, Da Nang people took control of their city.  He also asked them to do more research into the nation’s sovereignty over its sea and islands.
