SNCF reviews its copy for the renovation of Gare du Nord

05:45, 06/04/2021 (GMT+7)

Anne Hidalgo and Jean-Pierre Farandou, CEO of SNCF, have agreed to limit the space reserved for shops and services in the future renovated Gare du Nord. Not sure that this revision disarms opposition to the project.

Renovation of Gare du Nord is relaunched

One more twist in a soap opera that has not been stingy. Anne Hidalgo and Jean-Pierre Farandou, boss of the SNCF, announced Monday, November 23 an agreement to reduce the share of shops in the renovation project of the Gare du Nord. The new building which is to stand on the eastern flank will indeed lose one and a half floors, thus reducing by 7,500 square meters the commercial areas announced in the original plan. Planned within the walls, the performance hall would thus go by the wayside. In addition, a building on rue de Maubeuge, originally intended to accommodate 7,100 m2 of offices, will eventually be offered to the railway police and perhaps shared with the future unified command center for lines B and D of the RER. These changes therefore translate into a clear cut in the 136,000 m2 of services and shops initially planned.

Marlène Dolveck, general manager of Gares & Connexions at the SNCF, insists on the “de-densification” of this new project, which aims to respond to the criticisms formulated by Anne Hidalgo over the past year. “We do not want a shopping center with a station in it”, recalled the city councilor in the introduction to the press conference.
